B3-F: Special Issues Facing Black Families in Obtaining Autism Services

This session will begin with an opportunity for CARD staff to share some experiences they have encountered in helping Black families obtain services and supports for their child with ASD. Then the majority of the session will be an open forum for Black family members and Black professionals and all others to share challenges they have faced in getting services. We will also discuss successes and offer strategies that have been successful in obtaining quality services for Black children on the spectrum.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Identify strategies that promote community collaboration and utilize community input.
  2. Discuss the ethics of providing culturally responsive care for autism.
  3. Explore strategies that may promote respect for Black autistic individuals and their families.
