B4-D: Fade: Increasing Self-Management Strategies at Work to Phase Out Prompts

For students with autism entering the world of work for the first time, it is important they co-create meaningful goals and track how they are meeting them. Self-management strategies are key to promoting independence on job sites so job coaches can fade prompts sooner and students can experience success.

As students with autism near adulthood, it becomes increasingly important for them to have a sense of self-efficacy. This belief that one’s actions can impact one’s life is the opposite of learned helplessness and a key ingredient in moving toward independence. Self-management strategies are beneficial in that they teach students they can “control” their own behavior—and therefore, their own success.
