B5-D: Child Welfare: A Dependency Overview

Providing a beginner’s guide into the Florida Child Welfare system with an overview of history, laws, process and terminology. This is a basic breakdown for professionals that may work directly with that population and would benefit from additional understanding. In addition to explaining how the dependency system works, this presentation will offer insight into how different traumas such as neglect, differing abuse, mental health, and others affect day-to-day life for children in the system; as well as how having developmental diagnosis increases the risk of exposure to Adverse Childhood Experiences. ACEs affect development, cognition, executive function and social emotional regulations, contributing to increased risk factors that perpetuate generational cycles of trauma and abuse. Florida’s care.
