SP-1: The Black Side of Autism™

The Black Side of Autism™ delves into cultural awareness in working with Black families of disabled children. Through examining personal biases and cultural sensitivity, participants will explore the unique intersection of Black culture, family values, and autism diagnosis. Led by Maria Davis-Pierre, this workshop aims to equip attendees with practical tools to enhance cultural humility, fostering a more inclusive and responsive approach to care.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Participants will differentiate key cultural values, expectations, and norms specific to Black autistic families.
  2. Participants will evaluate how race and autism intersect within the Black community, focusing on dismantling stereotypes and facilitating better understanding.
