B1-A Translational Neuroscience in ASD 1 of 2: Creating a useful laboratory-based brain narrative for ASD, for non-neuroscientists

Our generation has seen an exponential increase in knowledge about the brain in autism that rests on the development of powerful new technologies to study the brain.  Effectively translating knowledge gained from laboratory-based brain studies in autism to improve clinical care in autism, is the need, the promise, and the challenge, that is translational neuroscience (TN).  This first of two TN lectures will focus on the laboratory component of the autism TN dialectic. No neuroscience background necessary.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Describe why improving our understanding of the brain basis of autism is necessary to improve the quality of our clinical decision-making in autism.
  2. Describe why improving our understanding of how we make brain discoveries improves our understanding of what these discoveries mean.
  3. Describe common obstacles that interfere with the ability of the autism community to understand the brain.
  4. Describe metaphors and heuristic models that encapsulate prominent autism brain discoveries.
