B4-C DIRFloortime: Shifting the Paradigm from Pathology to Potential

DIRFloortime is an evidence-based support model for neurodivergent individuals.  For years, clinicians and caregivers have viewed neurodivergence as a disorder to be fixed.  As the autistic community has advocated for awareness about differences not being disordered, the clinical field has begun to shift using terms such as support and capacities in the context of a psycho-social model of disability rather than the medical model of disability.  This presentation will address DIRFloortime as a support model that relies on one’s attunement toward social emotional development, individual differences, and relationships among the caregiver, child, and clinician tryad.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Name the first four emotional developmental capacities in the DIR framework
  2. List at least three individual differences often related to the autistic community
  3. Cite three research studies documenting the scientific efficacy of DIRFloortime
