B4-A: Connecting with Autism: Perspective of a mother and professional in the mental health field.

Parents of children with autism deal with their child’s developmental challenges including socio-emotional, learning, physical, emotional, behavioral, etc. Mental health professionals also confront challenges in their attempts to satisfy the needs of those diagnosed with ASD and their families. As a mother of a child diagnosed with ASD and a mental health professional, I am describing my experience as a mother dealing with some of the challenges faced by parents of children diagnosed with ASD and my experience as a mental health professional providing quality services to families and children with ASD.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Participants will be able to identify symptoms associated to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
2. Participants will have a better understanding of the challenges faced by Hispanic children with ASD as well as their parents or caregivers
3. Participants will be able to identify possible challenges faced by mental health professionals in their attempts to satisfy the emotional and mental health needs of Hispanic children with ASD and their families
4. Participants will increase sensitivity towards neurodiverse population
