FK-1: Engaging social skills activities for students with ASD

This presentation aims to increase awareness of certain key challenges associated with autism spectrum disorder and offer school personnel some engaging strategies for helping students on the
spectrum.

First, I will review some ways that young people with ASD can struggle with social communication, peer interaction and emotional regulation. Then, I will present some freely available social skills learning activities which attendees can consider using in their own work . (All resources presented are available at autismteachingstrategies.com.)

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Attendees will be able to describe several ways that students with ASD are affected by communication, emotional and interaction challenges.
  2. With fellow conference attendees, we will briefly try out anime based emotional identification and a quick, visual method of helping students find common interests.
  3. Attendees will be introduced to some other free download resources created by Joel Shaul, and
    examine implementation strategies.
