FB3-D: Life is Sensory

Life is a sensory experience; everything we do is sensory. When not properly supported, sensory challenges negatively impacts every aspect of life. Research indicates up to 90% of autistics experience challenges with sensory processing. It’s essential to know how to support these challenges. During this talk, an autistic OT shares her inner experiences while teaching in depth about processing challenges within the 8 senses and their effects on daily functioning across settings. Additionally, attendees learn multiple evidence-based strategies and cost-effective coping tools to assist with sensory regulation. Creating sensory friendly environments, adapting activities, and making supports accessible are also explored.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Explain the 3 categories of sensory processing challenges

2. List the 8 senses and describe at least 2 ways sensory processing challenges can manifest in each.

3. Identify at least 5 signs that can point to an underlying sensory processing problem.

4. Describe at least 3 ways to support those with sensory processing challenges.
