FB2-E: Functional Communication Training: Reducing Maladaptive Behaviors in the Home & Classroom
January 13, 2023 2:45pm 4:00pm Legacy North 2
Functional communication training (FCT) is most frequently used to replace interfering behaviors (e.g., disruptive, repetitive/stereotypical) or subtle, less clear communicative forms (e.g., reaching, leading). Many of these behaviors have common occurrences within self-contained as well as inclusive classrooms and may limit student access to education. FCT replaces these interfering behaviors with more conventional communicative forms (e.g., pointing, picture, exchange, signing, verbalizations). In doing so, it promotes more effective communication which can lead to less frustration and increased levels of student engagement.
- Attendees will be able to identify potential students that would benefit from FCT and create individualized systems for each of them.
- Promote the use of the FCT protocol for each student through modeling and shaping until mastery is achieved.
- Train support staff in the classroom on implementation of FCT protocol.
