David Childers

Dr. David O. Childers, Jr. Dr. Childers is Associate Professor of Pediatrics currently serving as Chief of Divisions of Neurodevelopmental Pediatrics, General Academic Pediatrics, Northeast Florida Early Steps Program, Executive Director, regional Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD), and Executive Director, regional Florida Diagnostics and Learning Disabilities Multidisciplinary Center (FDLRS-MDC) at UF College of Medicine, Jacksonville. Dr. Childers graduated from Notre Dame with a degree in History. He served as the Electronics Officer on the Navy’s electronic test platform, then taught a 2 semester full credit course in American Military History at Vanderbilt. He completed medical school at Texas A&M and residency at Naval Hospital, Portsmouth VA. He served as a staff pediatrician at Camp Lejeune Marine Corps base, then completed a fellowship in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital. He returned to Camp Lejeune establishing the 1st developmental program/EIP at the one of the busiest Naval Hospitals He also was the senior officer of Charlie Company, 2nd Medical Battalion, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Forces from 1992-1995 and again from 1998-2002. He retired from the Navy in Feb 2003. Dr. Childers is board certified in General Pediatrics, Neurodevelopmental Disabilities and Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics. Dr. Childers recently served on the AAP Executive Committee for the Section on Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics as previous Chair of the Education Subcommittee. For the past three years he served as the Program Chair for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics for the AAP National Meeting, and currently serves on Planning Committee for the AAP DB Peds . He has previously served on the AAP Council on Child Care Centers as the representative for Florida. Dr. Childers has been married to his wife Carol since 1980, after chasing her over 7 years through high school and college. He has two sons. David is an equities fund manager, and a Lieutenant Commander Naval Aviator in the Navy Reserves. Brian teaches high school English to students at a private college prep.
