FB2-A: Battling Back: Learning and Mental Health After the Pandemic

The pandemic influenced both the way we teach, and the way students learn. The average U.S. student in grades 3-8 lost the equivalent of a half year of learning in math and a quarter of a year in reading. Many students also experienced family loss, food and financial insecurity, and loss of school connectedness. Students who were lower-achieving pre-pandemic are taking a longer time to make up ground post-pandemic. This presentation will discuss how schools and teachers can battle back from pandemic losses by addressing shortened attention spans, frustration tolerance, and coping behaviors and set students up for future success.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Understand the impact of the pandemic on student learning
2. Understand the impact of the pandemic on student mental health
3.  Identify what schools can do to battle back from pandemic losses
4.  Identify what teachers can do to battle back from pandemic losses”
