B1B:Literacy Instruction for Students with Extensive Support Needs

AbstractThe learning characteristics of students with extensive support needs requires collaboration with families and professionals to determine goals and objectives of literacy assessment and instruction. Because of their expertise in communication and language, speech-language pathologists can play a key role in literacy assessment and instruction. The presentation provides an overview of literacy assessment and instruction and describes learner characteristics that impact literacy learning and research-based literacy instruction for this population.
Objectives1.   Describe the learning characteristics of students with extensive support needs 2.   Identify current models of literacy assessment and instruction 3.   Outline the role of the SLP in literacy instruction for students with extensive support needs.
