B2B: The Importance of Hormones in Addressing the Health Disparities of Girls and Women with Autism

AbstractWhile knowledge of the pivotal roles hormones play has increased, we are only now starting to understand their particular significance when it comes to the well-being of girls and women with autism. Studies are confirming that they experience a number of mental and physical health disparities at higher rates than autistic males or neurotypical females, especially during periods of great hormonal fluctuation such as puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. The presentation will provide an overview of the existing research and explore steps that can be taken at individual and systemic levels to address these challenges.
Objectives1. Attendees will be able to identify some of the key ways hormones impact our mental and physical health.
2. Attendees will have a better understanding of the health disparities experienced by girls and women with autism.
3. Attendees will be able to identify possible first steps that autistic women, caregivers of autistic girls, and the professionals who work with them can take to minimize some of these disparities.
4. Attendees will learn about recommendations for systematic-level changes to address these health disparities.
