B2D: Rolling for Connection: Using Dungeons & Dragons to Support Social-Emotional Growth in College Students with Autism and Related Disabilities

AbstractTabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs), such as Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), have gained attention for their potential to foster social connection and personal development. While their therapeutic value is increasingly recognized, particularly for neurodivergent individuals, their impact within academic settings, especially in higher education, remains underexplored. This session will present findings from a year-long study conducted at Beacon College, examining how Dungeons & Dragons can support the development of social-emotional skills in college students with learning differences, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and/or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Anecdotal evidence will be presented regarding successful cases of using such an intervention at this level.
Objectives1. Identify the potential benefits of tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons in supporting the social-emotional development of neurodivergent college students.
2. Learn about the successful creation and implementation of a D&D club focused on improving the social-emotional skills and well-being of neurodiverse students at the college level.
3. Recognize how participation in Dungeons & Dragons can naturally support the development of self-awareness and interpersonal skills in neurodivergent college students and has the potential to do the same for other, underexplored populations.
