F2B: Disproportionate Impact: Rethinking Alternative Education

AbstractStudents with disabilities, particularly Black and Hispanic students, are disproportionately placed in alternative schools, with little chance of returning to their zoned schools. Attendees will gain insight into these moves can result in denial of special education services, how discipline policies push this practice, and how educators can advocate for systemic change. Through real-life case studies, firsthand experiences, and data-driven analysis, this session provides actionable strategies for ending disproportionality. Educators, administrators, and policymakers will leave with tools to challenge the status quo, ensure students receive the support they deserve, and fight for a system that values every child.
Objectives1. Identify systemic disproportionate impact in special education placements and discipline policies, particularly for students of color and those with disabilities.
2. Analyze the impact of alternative school assignments on long-term student success and the barriers to returning to zoned schools.
3. Develop strategies to secure necessary student services, and promote equitable educational opportunities.
