B4G: Understanding the Autism Spectrum Disorder Diagnostic Process

Evaluations for autism spectrum disorder are often experienced as confusing, high-stakes events by families and supporting professionals. This presentation will demystify the diagnostic process by explaining different evaluation approaches and what is assessed, what information is needed, and how diagnostic conclusions are reached. The session will discuss how key information (e.g., referral concerns, developmental history, behavioral observations, standardized measures, collateral information) contributes to diagnostic decision making. Common misconceptions will be addressed, including overreliance on isolated behaviors and overemphasis on individual measures. Guidance on understanding evaluation reports and using findings to guide intervention, educational planning, and support will be provided.
