B4F: Water Readiness: Preparing Children with Autism for Swim Lessons

Many children with autism struggle in traditional swim lessons because the environment, pace, and sensory demands feel overwhelming. This session gives parents practical, neurodiversity-affirming strategies to help their child feel safer, calmer, and more confident before entering formal swim instruction. Because learning to swim is one important layer of drowning prevention for children with autism, participants will learn essential water safety principles, simple at-home activities to build water comfort, and ways to prepare for sensory experiences such as splashing, noise, and new routines. Families will leave with clear, compassionate tools that promote success in the water.

Learning Outcomes:

Identify key water safety and drowning prevention principles specific to children with autism.

Build foundational water comfort through sensory aware, neurodiversity affirming strategies.

Prepare their child for the demands of formal swim lessons by using simple, at-home readiness activities to introduce pool vocabulary, basic rules, and sensory or communication experiences.
