Florida's First Choice for Autism Supports
January 15, 2027 02:30 PM 03:45 PM
Many autistic and neurodivergent children, teens, and young adults are misunderstood when refusal, shutdowns, meltdowns, or avoidance are seen only as behavior. This session introduces a neuro-affirming, nervous-system-first framework for understanding what may be happening underneath these reactions. Participants will learn how stress, masking, demand distress, and capacity shifts can impact behavior at home and school, and how parents and professionals can respond with more clarity, less shame, and more effective support.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Participants will identify common signs that refusal, shutdowns, or meltdowns may reflect nervous system distress rather than intentional noncompliance.
2. Participants will describe how masking, demand distress, and capacity shifts can affect autistic children, teens, and young adults across home and school settings.
3. Participants will apply at least three neuro-affirming response strategies that reduce shame, lower pressure, and support regulation.
