B2E: Embracing Neurodiversity: Supporting families with the decision of why, when, and how to talk to their children about their autism diagnosis

AbstractChildren, adolescents and young adults who are aware of their autism diagnosis often feel empowered, become strong advocates for themselves, and develop both an understanding and acceptance of why they may feel different than their neurotypical peers. However, the decision to disclose a diagnosis is often one of the most difficult decisions for parents and families to navigate. This presentation explores research-based information on how to help families decide when and how to discuss this topic with their child. The common concerns, hesitations, and misconceptions commonly identified when withholding the diagnosis will be explored. Additionally, common tips and best ways to communicate a diagnosis will be presented.
Objectives1.Learn common concerns and opportunities that occur when discussing a diagnosis.
2.  Receive various tips, considerations, and scripts when discussing the topic of an autism spectrum diagnosis and/or co-occurring diagnoses.
3. Understand best practices when supporting families navigating whether to disclose a diagnosis. 
4. Utilize research to guide decision making regarding disclosing a diagnosis.
5. Identify strategies that can be utilized to build resilience among autistic individuals and their families.
