B4A: A Clinical Guide to Differentiating and Understanding the Co-occurrence of Autism and Childhood Apraxia of Speech

AbstractAutism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by challenges in social communication and reciprocity, accompanied by the presence of restrictive repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a neurological motor speech disorder characterized by imprecise and distorted speech sounds, impaired prosody and voicing, slowed overall rate of speech, and groping movements. Although ASD and CAS have distinct diagnostic criteria, they share overlapping clinical features and frequently co-occur. This presentation will highlight the differences and similarities between ASD and CAS through case studies.
Objectives1. Define childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
2. Compare and contrast symptoms of CAS and ASD.
3. Identify appropriate interventions
