B4G: Collaborative Intervention Approach: Integrating Behavior Analysis and with Other Professionals to Provide Interdisciplinary Care

Abstract There are a variety of medications that are prescribed with the intention of reducing symptoms that are associated with an autism diagnosis, such as self-injury and aggression (Aishworiya et al., 2022). Additionally, co-occurring diagnoses are highly prevalent in the autistic community (Simonoff et al., 2008), increasing the likelihood and complexity of medication trials and behavior analytic treatment. This talk presents a collaborative intervention model that combines the expertise of behavior analysts and other professionals to comprehensively address dangerous or destructive behavior in adolescents. By collaborating with professionals, this approach aims to provide tailored solutions for individuals facing complex behavioral challenges. The presentation will review the process for setting up collaborative relationships, creating goals, and the methodologies used in these collaborative case studies. Moreover, it offers valuable insights into the development of integrated systems that streamline communication and coordination among behavioral and psychiatric professionals, ultimately fostering more effective treatment and improved patient outcomes.
Objectives1. Identify the prevalence and implications of co-occurring diagnoses and psychotropic medication use in autistic adolescents and describe how these factors influence behavioral assessment and treatment planning.
2. Explain the essential components of establishing a collaborative intervention model, including forming partnerships with other professionals, developing shared goals, and coordinating treatment procedures.
3. Analyze case examples to evaluate how integrated behavioral–psychiatric collaboration can enhance treatment outcomes for adolescents with dangerous or destructive behavior, and apply these principles to future clinical or research practice.
