F3B: Communication and Curriculum: Collaborative AAC Implementation Between Educators and SLPs in Inclusive Classrooms

AbstractSupporting students who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) takes a team effort. This session focuses on how teachers, paraprofessionals, and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) can work together to improve communication and learning for AAC users. We’ll share our “on-the-ground” experience serving an ASD classroom via shared leadership, clear goal setting, and consistent evidence-based AAC implementation with a range of AAC systems. AAC resources, technology, and progress monitoring will be discussed. Special attention will be given to common challenges like unclear roles, inconsistency, and training gaps alongside practical solutions. The session highlights the importance of neurodiversity and presuming potential for an inclusive environment. By building a culture of shared responsibility and ongoing learning, teams can create classrooms where AAC users are fully included and supported.
